Total potassium content in soils varies from 0,8 to 2,5% and depends on the content of fine parts and their mineral composition. The majority of potassium in environment appears in the form of aluminosilicate and silicate, even though this form is not easily accessible for plants. In the soil potassium appears in 4 forms. The plants absorb potassium as a K+ ion. Balanced potassium fertilization is very important. Potassium is easily leached from light soils.
Small amount of potassium is also contained in organic soils, mainly in peat. Even though the potassium content in heavy soils is high it appears in forms not easily accessible for plants. Easily available potassium makes on an average 1% of total potassium. Leaching from heavy soils is limited. The heavier the soil the easier the potassium undergoes a process of reduction of its availabiity for plants. The dynamics of this process increases with:
Application of potassium is fundamental for balanced fertilization of plants. Improper N/K ratio may lead to increase of nitrates concentration in plants tissue, which in consequence lowers the nutrition value especially in case of vegetables. Excessive fertilization with potassium may also cause deteriorating of crop yields quality. Overfertilization with potassium is dangerous for orchards and berries plantations because it stimulates deficiency of magnesium, boron and calcium. Excessive fertilization with potassium leads to characteristic effects of magnesium deficiency on leaves and fruits are very sour. Potassium is very antagonistic towards magnesium and therefore it blocks both magnesium intake and its transportation within the plant. Sufficient supply of plants with potassium enhances their reaction to nitrogen fertilization and at the same time good nitrogen supply enhances potassium fertilization efficiency.
